O.W. Hampton

Opened Aug. 13, 2026, O.W. Hampton Intermediate School is one of the two newest schools (along with Richard Parker Junior High) in Wylie ISD. Hampton serves students in grades 5-6 on the east side of the district.

The school is named after Oather Walter (O.W.), "Hamp," Hampton, who dedicated his life to serving his country and community.

Hampton served the community as an expert tailor and dry cleaner for more than 45 years. He also served as a two-term mayor (1964-68), councilman, president of the Wylie Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Wylie Lions Club. It was during a Lions Club meeting where he famously coined the iconic community slogan, “Live the Life of Riley in Wide Awake Wylie.”

Hampton and his wife, Gladys, raised three children in Wylie: Dan, Pam, and Richard, all of whom graduated from Wylie High School.

Hampton also served as a volunteer firefighter and a Wylie ISD Board of Trustees member, and was a long-time booster and supporter of That Wylie Band.

Hampton passed away in 2007, but his legacy of leadership, faith, and community pride will continue to live on.
